  If you download this utility from crystalmark.info it can be a useful utility.

  Cons

  This version provided by download.cnet.com appears to contain a Trojan. McAfee endpoint security reported: Trojan : Artemis!5E7EE6D2562A as part of the download file and promptly deleted it.

  Summary

  Since the download from crystalmark.info does not trigger a virus warning yet the version provided here does, one can only assume some unscrupulous individual added it in at some point. a shame really, as I though Download.com would at least scan uploaded files for Trojans but apparently they do not.

  Summary

  Had a Seagate drive die on my and want to use all available tools to see if i can fix it and this was one of them. Unfortunately, Symantec Endpoint Protections marked it as WS.Reputation.1 and i trust SEP more than this so i wont run it. I strongly urge CNET to take a closer look at this as I'm sure they dont want to be known as a software virus distributor.

  Pros

  Intel Rapid Storage Technology was reporting SMART alert, tried using this but it couldn't see the drive.

  Cons

  Task Manager showed multiple conhost/cmd/notepad/msiexec processes running. Uninstalled CrystalDiskInfo, and rebooted but these processes remain and grow to use all resources.

• Beware "Search Protect"

  Works well.

  Cons

  Watch out for Conduit Search Protect which tries to install unless you select "custom install" and uncheck the box for it. I've used v5 for quite a while and I really liked it. Not happy about this search protect slipping in now.

  Summary

  Would give a higher rating if the Search Protect wasn't in there. It's very difficult to get out of a computer once it's in there.

• Installs third party software without your consent

  Pros

  Absolutely none - I bailed out of the install when it started adding third party software without my consent.

  Cons

  Nothing but adware and spyware - do not install this. Why would CNET even offer this garbage, much less recommend it?

  Summary

  I read the full end user agreement when I noticed mention of third party software. The agreement states that this software would not be added without your consent, so I decided to continue. The first thing that popped up was a screen asking if I wanted to perform "Express Install" or "Custom Install" of a program called "Search Protect". I was not given the option of not installing it, so I decided to cancel the entire Crystal installation. Much to my surprise, the program was installed anyway and it changed my browser homepage and search provider - all of this without my consent. Guess I'll be running Malware Bytes to see if anything else was added without my consent...

  ... it crashed my C:-drive... Lots of spy- and adware installed, changed my startup-page and finally made my c: unbootable. Took a few hours, but now up an running again.

  Summary

  If you are concerned about how your hard disk is doing this is the program for you. Each thing it tells you about you disk is easily searchable so you can find out what it means if you get alarms. WAY better than stuff like CHKDSK that comes with your OS. And its free!

  The software installs a boat load of adware and spyware programs such as SearchProtect toolbar, SearchConduit (a browser hijacker) designed to snoop your every move on the PC, sabotage your online searches, and opening your computer for further attacks.

  Summary

  I despise the developers of this software for resorting to this type of LOW in order to make a buck. This software has potential, but it's hindered by adware/spyware that installs automatically without the user's explicit consent. It took me an hour to remove SearchProtect as it managed to copy itself into all of the "program files" folders of my Windows drive.

  I downloaded this to check my hard drive to see if it was failing and I got so much garbage from downloading this. I got a whole bunch of add ware programs like tool bars that are hard to remove. I would not use it if I were you.
